Attacking Shape

Attacking shape is the basic structure that keeps the team useful around the ball.

The team should maintain width, depth, and support. Players should not all chase the ball or stand flat across the field. The ball carrier needs immediate options behind and beside them, while wider players hold space and stretch the defense. The underlying goal of attacking shape is to create overlaps — sections of the field where there are more attackers than defenders — and then move the ball into them.

Good attacking shape creates simple decisions. The carrier can run straight, take the touch, and trust that support will be available. The support players can continue the movement without forcing passes or stopping momentum. After passing the ball, a player is not done — they keep moving and loop into support so the attack stays connected across the next touch.

The shape should help the team move forward with purpose. If players get too flat, too narrow, or too far ahead of the ball, the attack becomes disconnected and easy to defend.
